On August the
17th 2013 the Friends of Telford Town park, in conjunction with Telford Green Spaces
Partnership, held an event known as Jolly Green Day. The day was a free event
for the public to come along and see what was on offer in the way of exciting
things to do out of doors, mostly for free. There were community games, water
zorbing, crafts and much more. The event was held on the Queen Elizabeth 2
Field, known as the Arena, which is a protected site with the Fields in Trust
Organisation (formerly the National Playing fields Association). Jolly Green
Day was entered into a competition for the best “Have a Field Day” with Fields
in Trust. The Friends were shortlisted out of 100 applicants and subsequently invited
to attend an awards ceremony at Lords Cricket Ground in London on the 28th
November 2013. They were up against stiff competition, including Down Lane Park, Tottenham Hale, London and
Queensgate Park, Bridlington in Yorkshire.
The moment
arrived with athlete Dave Moorcroft OBE and footballer Graeme Le Saux on stage
saying “and the winner is…............................................................................Telford Town Park Arena!”
Thanks to all
the hard work and effort put in by the Friends and Telford Green Spaces
Partnership and the support of many other organisations we had won the best “Have a Field Day with Join In for 2013”.
It is hoped to
eventually have the award permanently displayed in the Town Park Visitor
Centre.
